The best way to include homemade milk kefir in your daily routine is to start your day with a delicious smoothie. This recipe is for berries, but you can add any other of your favorite fruits, nuts, or protein or supplement powder. The possibilities are endless!
What is milk kefir?
If you have never made milk kefir at home, check out my easy homemade milk kefir post to learn how easy it is. Milk kefir is a fermented milk drink that is full of gut healthy probiotics and other nutrients.
It is great to make yourself because it is simple and it packs many more nutrients than most store bought versions.
It is made by pouring milk over kefir grains and letting the mixture sit out at room temperature for 24 hours. Viola! You have milk kefir. The milk will thicken slightly and you will want to strain the grains out so that you can continue to make batch after batch.
Why you will love this recipe
First, this recipe is very versatile. Once you learn the parts that go into the berry smoothie you can change it up and try new flavor combinations.
Second, it is a crowd pleaser! No, I am not suggesting you start feeding your whole neighborhood…but you could. I never get any complaints when this smoothie is on the menu. My kids love it and so does my husband! I have made a big batch for sleepover friend and they love it too!
Lastly, it is a very healthy option. Not only are the natural probiotics a great way to start your day. They are good for improving your gut health. You can add protein powders, supplement powders, or collagen peptides to pack in even more nutrition.

Tips for making berry milk kefir smoothie
- You can easily switch out the berries I suggest for other berries if you don’t like them or don’t have them on hand.
- If you don’t have kefir on hand, substitute with 1 cup yogurt and 2 cups milk to still get the same probiotic benefits.
- If milk kefir is too sour for you or someone in your family you can add honey or maple syrup to taste.
- A great addition to this smoothie is collagen peptides. I recommend this brand because it is clean label certified and tested free of heavy metals.
- This berry smoothie is a great way to sneak in extra good stuff for your kids and they won’t even taste it. You can add veggies or veggie powders, nuts or nut butter, and sometimes I add egg yolks.
